(OLEAN, NY via SPRINGFIELD, MA) - UMass started their Atlantic 10 conference schedule on New Year’s Eve, in Olean, NY. They were on the road to play St. Bonaventure. St. Bonaventure had lost 4 straight games; UMass had a comeback win against Dartmouth early, last week.
UMass Guard Noah Fernandes returned to the court on Saturday. He scored the first basket for UMass. Fernandes had been out of the lineup for 4 weeks with an ankle injury.
St. Bonaventure Guard Daryl Banks III got off to hot start and stayed hot the entire game. He scored a game-high 31 points, making six 3FGs. Yann Farrell chipped in with 22 points.
UMass committed too many turnovers this afternoon. UMass was up 9-7 at the 15-minute mark. UMass had 3 costly turnovers that St. Bonaventure capitalized on. At the under 12-minute media timeout, St. Bonaventure had the lead 16-12. They never looked back.
Fernandes made a 3 but was called for a technical foul after the shot. UMass HC Frank Martin wasn’t happy about that call. He let the officials know about it, until Martin was called for a technical foul. After that swing, St. Bonaventure led 31-19.
At halftime, UMass was down 43-28. The Minutemen struggled on offense. Fernandes got in foul trouble so he was on the bench instead of leading the offense. UMass committed 11 turnovers in the 1st half, 16 for the game.
St. Bonaventure ran away with the game in the second half. They won, handily, 83-64.
Fernandes scored a team-high 13 points. Issac Kante and Brandon Martin scored 12 points each.
TJ Weeks Jr. and Dyondre Dominguez combined for 2 points (scored by Weeks).
UMass hosts Saint Louis this Wednesday @ The Mullins Center. The game tips off @ 7:30 PM.
