(WILBRAHAM) - Friday night was the last game of the regular season for the Golden Eagles of Springfield Central HS (Central) and the Falcons of Minnechaug Regional HS.
Central received the opening kickoff. Minnechaug got pressure on Central QB Will Watson early in the first possession. Minnechaug forced Central to punt. Minnechaug couldn’t move the ball and they punted the ball back to Central.
Minnechaug’s defense stepped up again on Central’s second offensive possession. They forced another punt, which is a rare occurrence for Central. Minnechaug couldn’t capitalize however and had to punt the ball back to Central.
Central finally got on the scoreboard on their 3rd possession. Watson threw a short pass to WR Jaykelis Algarin. Algarin avoided one tackle and sprinted to the endzone untouched. The 2-point conversion was scored by Kymari Latney. Central led 8-0 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Will Watson showed why he is one of the best QB prospects in Massachusetts. He ran for two TDs. Both TDs were scored off read-option plays where Watson kept the ball after faking the handoff to the RB and running past all the Minnechaug defenders.
He also made the play of the year with his TD pass to WR Luis Hernandez.
Latney scored the 3 two-point conversions.
Central led at halftime 32-0.
Minnechaug got on the scoreboard in the third quarter. K Nic Patrakis kicked a 36 yard FG that was successful.
On the ensuing kickoff, Minnechaug tried an onside kick. Central RB Tariq Thomas collected the ball and returned it for a TD. Latney scored the 2-point conversion. Thomas scored another TD in the third on a 13 yard run. Latney was stopped on the 2-point conversion. Central led 46-3.
That score lasted through the 4th quarter and Central defeated Minnechaug 46-3.
